Using pick up sticks allows you to make a weft or warp thread go over several threads with or without adding a second heddle to your loom.
This way you can weave either regular patterns like twill, or create unique designs by adding the pick up stick to create floats over varying, selected threads.
A pick up stick behind the heddle(s) allows you to "memorise" a pattern and activate it by either sliding it forward towards the heddle or putting it on its edge.
In combination with a second heddle the pick up stick turns your rigid heddle loom into the equivalent of a four shaft loom!
The pick up stick is also very useful to open up a narrow shed, especially when using sticky threads, to easen the passage of the shuttle.
